STEWART ISLAND.

Since my last letter death has Carried off two of our community. The drst was Mr Yon. Tunzelman,. late native schoolmaster at The Heck. Then on Monday, the 23rd ult., a very old identity, Mr Jas. Harrold, passed away at the advanced age of 84. He had been for a good many years a resident on the Island, and was highly respected. On the evening of 24th May the Undenominational church held an anniversary soiree, and although the night was anything but pleasant, over 200 persons sat down to partake of the good things provided. After tea one and all betook themselves to the church, where a sacred concert brought a very enjoyable evening to a close. On previous occasions ’ the little church was large enough to hold all who came, but this time standing room was not even procurable. The choir was ably led by Mr H. Yalpy, who, with the other members of the family, took part all through the concert, and undoubtedly deserve great praise for the manner in which each did his or her part. Recitations by Miss Lizzie Pollock and Miss Bessie Hicks and a sacred song by Miss Lizzie Thomson were very much enjoyed—in fact, all who took part deserve to be commended. The pleasure of the company was, however, marred by the unseeming conduct of a few young men who occupied the back seats, and who seemed to think that no meeting is complete without their disgraceful disturbances. These, however, are to be met with everywhere, and have to be endured like the so-called German measles, which are at present going the rounds. Pishing is in full swing, and although bad weather is prevalent, good catches have been made. The schooner Annie Hill has finished loading at Mr J. Murdoch’s, and the Jessie Nicol is busy loading at Swain and Go’s, sawmills.

The weather is very unsettled, but as winter is upon us, we must, as the Scotchmen say, thole it.
