CLIFTON AND WOODEND.
On Friday night the Rev. P. A. Pybus gave a magic lantern entertainment in Clifton Hall, the subject being “ Eva and Uncle Tom.” A large number of views illustrating the story were shewn, and the Strathearn church choir, under the leadership of Mr J. Hawkins, gave several selections, which delighted the audience. There was a fair attendance, considering the rough weather, but a larger audience assembled at Woodend on Monday night, when the same entertainment was given. After the long spell of wet weather all the roads are in a very bad state. There is not such a large traffic on the Bluff road this winter —the firewood trade not being so brisk as formerly, owing to the limited supply at the mill. Most of our sportsmen have been trying their luck, but no very large bags have been obtained in Seaward Bush, the best I have heard of being 33. Pigeons and ducks are fairly numerous, but very shy, and kakas are very scarce this season. The sleeper-squaring industry is giving employment to a large number of residents. There is a large quantity of sleepers stacked at Woodend, and they seem to be a very good lot, and should have no difficulty in passing inspection. Building has been very brisk in Clifton of late. Five new buildings having been erected, and others are contemplated. Mr Pollard’s store has just been rebuilt, and is now a handsome - looking structure. It speaks well for the prosperity of the district, when, within a compass of two miles, we have two butchers, a blacksmith, a shoemaker, and five stores. The new school committee is getting to work very quickly. Next week they give the first of a series of concerts in aid of the school funds. The programme is a good one.
