WAIANIWA.

The annual sports of the Waianiwa Athletic Society took place on Thursday, 30th ult., in a paddock belonging to Mr T. Wilson, of Oporo. The weather was good, and considering that there was a counter-attraction in an excursion to Colac, the number of people that assembled was highly satisfactory. The programme consisted of 14 events, and was carried out most expeditiously and in a manner reflecting credit on the officebearers, more particularly as entries were received and allocated on the ground. Regarding the sports it would be hard to speak too highly. The district was honoured by a number of Southland’s most prominent athletes, and as a consequence the various events were most interesting and exciting. One noteworthy and commendable feature of the racing was the absence of what might be called pointing; each competitor seemed to have an honest determina-

tion to win* The pity was that after such keenly contested races, the prizes were not larger; but probably by another year an effort will be made to considerably augment the prize fund, thus bringing out more competition, and, at the same time, establishing the society on a firm footing. Mr K. Cameron was present, and during the day played a number of tunes on the bagpipes, to the delectation of everyone. Mr J. Gr, feteans had a refreshment booth on the ground to suit the convenience of the people. In the evening a lively dance took place in the Waianiwa Hall, which was attended by about 30 couples. The music was supplied by Messrs F. Boyd and T. W. Stevenson, while Mr P. McDermid efficiently acted as M.O. Appended is the prize list. 100 yards maiden race—l, E Reidy ; 2’ W R McAuley.
