WINTOM.
The holidays are over, and we have got into harness again. The weather was fine, and no accidents of any kind took place. The bazaar was a thorough success, the gross takings amounting to £250. This is not so bad for a small pace like Winton, The receipts on Boxing night reached the handsome sum of £llß odd. This amount for one night would do credit even to a larger town. No doubt the takings (although satisfactory so far) would have been very much larger had greater freedom been allowed. As the Act stands in relation to these matters only articles such as sculptures, engravings, and oil paintings were allowed to be raffled ; our local constable was present, and saw that the law was not infringed. The takings at the door on Boxing night were nearly £23. The Southland Pipe Band played a number of selections, both inside and outside the hall, and fully deserved the three cheers accorded them. The Limehills String Band and the local Brass Band also deserve a special word of praise, and last, but by no means least, the good ladies who were in charge of their respective stalls. They spared neither time nor energy both before and during the bazaar to make it a success. Their task was a labour of love.
The Caledonian Society’s sports were again a brilliant success —every officer worked harmoniously and vigorously together. The Southland Pipe Band was a decided acquisition.
Almost on the eve of the New Year a marriage took place in the English Church here, the contracting parties being Mr E. H, Spencer, of South' Hillend, and Miss Ethel Maud, eldest daughter of Mr Tressler, Limehills. The bridesmaids were the bride’s sister (Florence) and Miss J. Gibbs, and Mr J. Spencer acted as best man. The ceremony was performed by Archdeacon Stocker.
