WINTON.

At the last meeting of the A. and P. Association the balance-sheet in connection with the late grain and root show was submitted showing a credit of £7 4s 4d the total receipts being £llß 13s 6d and the expenditure £lll 9s 2d. This statement was considered highly satisfactory, and the balance-sheet adopted. The Gore Farmers’ Club wrote suggesting that the Charitable Aid Act should be amended so that all aid shall come from the consolidated revenue. The question will be discussed at the next meeting. A general meeting of the executive of the Athenaeum was held on Wednesday—the President (Mr Liddel) in the chair, with the following members in attendance : Messrs White, McWilliara, Kidd, Steven, O’Brien and the Rev. Mr Baird. The sum of £l6 4s 4d was passed for payment, and £lO was voted for new books to be chosen by the selection committee. This committee desire subscribers to insert in the suggestion books the names of any books that they wish to be added to the library. A number of free papers and ot her periodicals are given gratuitously. Others will be thankfully received from other proprietors who have not so fai extended their liberality in this laudable direction.

I understand the Jockey Club intend to have another day’s racing on the Queen’s Birthday. In connection with the improvements to railway station it would be a good thing if the letter receiving box were fixed at the side facing the township, and thus avoid having to go round to the narrow platform —a risky proceeding on a dark night. The entrance to the post office should also be closed and another opened either at the south-east end or at the back.
