(By Telegraph.) Inquest. AUCKLAND, January 15. At the inquest on the body of fireman B. Rankin, of the Mamari, a verdict of accidental death was returned. The evidence showed that death was partly caused by his striking the wharf in his fall from the gangway and partly by submersion. ' Prom Habitual Drunkenness. A woman named Theresa Head was found dead in a house in Cook Street. The jury brought in a verdict of death from habitual drunkenness. Political Address. GISBORNE, January 15. Dr Newman, M.H.R., addressed a large meeting on the politics of the day. It has been decided that the lighthouse on Cape Palliser shall be erected on a prominent head-land about 240 feet high, one mile east of the cape. The light will show from the eastern side along the coast about E.N.E., and on the western side about W. by N., and will be seen abput seven miles south of Pencarrow light. It will be seen for a distance of about twenty-five miles. The Scandalmongers Responsible for Her Death. At the inquest on the girl Mason, found in the Ruamahunga river, the jury returned a verdict of temporary insanity, caused by groundless charges brought against her. Yachting. CHRISTCHURCH, January 15. The yachts Mascotte and Pastime left Lyttelton last night for Wellington to take part in the regatta on January 22nd. Canterbury College. At a meeting of the Board of Governors of Canterbury College yesterday it was decided to establish a biological laboratory. Plans were adopted. The estates committee reported in favour of the properties of the Board being brought under the Public Bodies Powers Act, but a motion adjourning consideration of the matter to next meeting was carried. Fire Brigade Item. The fire insurance companies having declined to allow the usual 25 per cent, discount on premiums in Sydenham owing to the absence of a fire extinguishing plant and the failure of the Borough Council to make arrangements with the City Council for the services of the Christchurch brigade, the Sydenham Council last night decided to offer the City Council £IOO per annum for the use of the chemical engine and the horsing of the railway steam engine.
