His Excellency the Earl of Onslow, with the Countess of Onslow, and his aide-de-camp, Captain Baviilo, left for Wellington to-day overland. The parly were escorted to the train by the Mayor, and to him Lord Onslow returned thanks for the hospitality and attention ho and Lady Onslow had received from the people of Auckland. During the journey they will visit the Lake district, pass through Napier and Masterton, and arrive at Wellington at about 12.30 p.m. on Thursday. t

Laing and Smith, the two principals in yesterday’s light, together with their seconds, were this morning charged before the Resident Magistrate with behaving in a public place, to wit the racecourse, in a manner calculated to provoke a breach of the peace. r i he case was dismissed, the Resident Magistrate holding that the racecourse is not in included in the definition of “a public place” in the portion of the Act under which the information was laid. A second case, in which the police applied to have the men bound over to keep the peace, on the ground that they had agreed to fight within 48 hours, was also dismissed, the articles produced expressly exempting the continuance of the fight if the police interfered. William Moore, for breaking and entering was sentenced to 18 months’ hard labour. There were four charges of perjury. The Grand Jury threw out the bills against Martin Petrie and Jessie Petrie for yerjury, and brought in true bills against James McLauchlan and Albert Edward Nelson for perjury The court adjourned till to-morrow morning, when the perjury cases will be taken. are expected to last several days.
