FOUND DEAD.
A SEQUI L TO MYSTERIOUS DISAPPEARANCE.
An inquest was held 3’eserday at Palmerston North by Mr J. W. Poynton, S. M., coroner, into the circumstances of the death of J. Cole, a Palmerston North dentist, who disappeared on May 18th, 1898. Sub-Inspector Marsack stated that in May 1898 a Mr John Cole disappeared and had not been traced. A few days ago at Tiakitahuna some bones were found by a Mr Morgan, a farm hand employed by Mr H. J. Gallichan. Near them were also found a card case bearing the name J. Cole and a five-chambered revolver. Evidence as to the finding of the bones and the other articles mentioned was given by Morgan. Constable Gow stated that on the 18th Inst, he went out to Galichan’s farm and took possession of the human bones now lying at the police station. There was no trace of clothing and hub a tiace of a pair of hoots. Tbe country where the remains were found was liable to floods and left a deposit of silt. He had examined the revolver produced, and four chambers were still loaded and the fifth chamber under the hammer bad been discharged.
Inspector Wilson said that in 3898 lie was in chaige of the Palmerston North district. He produced the diary of that year and found that on May 18th of that year Mr Batt reported that a mau named John Cole, a dentist, was missing. Inquiry was made all over the Dominion for the man. The man was never found. The Coroner returned a verdict that the remains found were those of Cole and that there was nothing to show how death occurred. —Manawata Times.
