FIRST BOROUGH ELECTION

MR. H. L. MARTIN MAYOR Heavy Polling The first election for Mayor and eight councillors for the newlyconstituted borough of Putaruru was held yesterday. With an election for the Mayoralty and 22 candidates offering for eight seats on the council it was expected that polling would be heavy. These expectations were realised, and voters attended the booth steadily throughout the day. This was one of the first elections held under the new franchise. Although the three weeks’ campaign was keen there were no sectional “ scraps ” and it was conducted in a thoroughly harmonious manner. Mr. A. C. Anderson, who had been chairman of the Town Board for the past five years, had a redoubtable opponent in a prominent business and public man in Mr. H. L. Martin, and was defeated by a small margin- , Results were:— MAYORALTY ANDERSON, Augustus Colin .. 237 MARTIN, Harry Liddell 281 Mr. Martin was elected. Twenty-six declaration votes are yet to be counted, but these will not affect the result.
