INQUEST HELD

MAORI BABY’S DEATH An inquest was held recently before Mr. A. C. Anderson, coroner, on the death of a tliree-month-old Maori hah}’, Jocelyn Materoa Ranga, who died at Pineda le on 9th July. Evidence was heard and revealed that the child had been a normal baby and ill good health except that she had been suffering from a slight cold. The mother had put the child to bed after feeding her at about 6.30 a. m„ and as the baby was in the habit of sleeping for long periods at one time the mother did not have any occasion to examine her until later in die afternoon. When she went to take the baby from the bed she found her dead. Dr. Doherty was called hut found life extinct in the child. He had examined the child and was satisfied that death was accidental and caused through asphyxia resulting from an obstruction of the child’s larynx by mucus during sleep. The coroner returned a verdict on the same lines.
