Westport Earthquakes
“ PANDEMONIUM LET LOOSE.” Westport, Feb. 25. From 8 yesterday morning till 11.30 last night the community was not disturbed by earth shocks. At 11.30 there was a repetition of the dull boom with a little vibration. At 12.17 a.m, there was another cannonade and very pronounced shaking. No damage was done by any of the numerous shocks since the lively couple of minutes at 12.36 on Saturday. The origin of the disturbances is plainly to the south-west of Westport. It must be relatively close, too, as no damage was done at Greymouth on the one side and only the initial shock was felt at Karamea on the other side. The colliers describe Saturday’s experience as pandemonium let loose. Women and children throughout the district are unnerved. EXPERIENCE OF A STEAMER. Auckland, 1 eb. 25. While the steamer Katoa, from Westport to Auckland, was off Westport at 12.38 o’clock on Saturday, she was lifted by a submarine disturbance and shaken from stem to stern. The sensation was as though the steamer had been raised from under, and was scraping her way over a derelict. The shock lasted four seconds, but had no appreciable effect on the sea. Captain. Norten is of opinion that the' centre of the seismic disturbance was out to sea.
