EVENTFUL MOTOR JOURNEY.
RAIN AND AN ACCIDENT. The members of the Nelson Education Board who left by motor car on Saturday morning had a somewhat eventful journey, reports the Nelson “ Evening Mail,” and only reached Reefton on Sunday at 4 p.m. owing to a severe storm and the heaviest downpour ever known in the locality. Clark Creek rose ten feet, and during Friday evening washed the bridge away. The car attempted to cross, but stuck, and members were carried out and horses pulled out the car. This, and a large slip on the Nelson side of the Hope Saddle, caused five hours’ delay. They arrived at Murchison at 7,30 p.m.' On Sunday, at noon, when about threequarters of a mile from the Lyell, the party met a sulky containing the Rev. Willis, wife, 15-months’ old child. Thirty yards from the car Rev. Willis was attempting to turn round when the horse backed over a bank. Fifteen feet down the sulky, struck a tree and shrubs, and this saved the lives of all. Members of. the Board released the horse, which then rolled to the bottom of the cliff, about 50 feet. The sulky was hauled up with a rope, but they were unable to get the horse up. The occupants were unhurt;.
