MR DAVITTS JOKE.
It would be difficult to name a Wellknown public man who has had a more remarkable career than Mr. Michael Davitt, who has recently retired from Parliamentary life. He is the only man who has sat in any of the Queen's Parliaments after serving twenty years in prison. Mr. Davitt is fond of telling his friends of an incident which occurred many years ago at a meeting of the United Irish league, where he was one of the speakers. He sat down by an old lady, who, not knowing him, asked him to point out Mr. Davitt. Being in a mischievous mood, Mr. Davitt pointed to ono of his colleagues, saying; “ There he is—that man yonder; uglier than myself,” and the old lady, wishing to be polite to Mr. Davitt, observed, "Ah, sure, sir, that’s impossible!”
