Mail Services.
Now that Messrs Newman Bros, are again commencing the new bi-weekly mail contract between Blenheim and Nelson via Havelock, we strongly recommend the Postal Department to arrange for the coaches to run triweekly, as we understand the extra cost would be only nominal, for they would carry sea-borne letters which have to be paid for through other channels, and the benefit of the- extra mail weekly all along the road with other conveniences to settlers in a growing and important district would be a direct boon to them and the towns at each end of the service.

So far as we can ascertain the lowest tender (£2B) for the mail contract between Havelock and Maori Bay has been declined. Surely this is not another promise made by the Government, which is going to be broken as many others have been.
A party of gentlemen interested in the Southern Cross Reef at Waikakaho left Havelock on Saturday last on a visit of inspection to that locality. The party consisted of Messrs Chrichton, Dorreen, Hart, and Reader, and they were very pleased with the prospects, and expect to hear of the reef being cut at any moment. A pugseam which shows on the top 18 inches thick was cut in driving the present tunnel, and it is fully expected that the reef will be cut at the same level. The tunnel is now in 306 feet. We were shown apiece of dark quartz taken from the outcrop, which was studded with gold, and taking this as an indication we should imagine that the shareholders in this claim have got hold of a really vich reef, and a prospect of big dividends. Owing jto the unfortunate downpour of rain yesterday the ladies and gentlemen who were to come from Nelson to take part in the concert to have been held last evening were unable to get here.
