Legislative Councillors.
A telegram from Wellington states that several appointments to the Legislative Council have been determined on. Messrs Fulton and Ormond are certainties. Mr Downie Stewart is not finally settled. Great pressure is being brought to bear to induce the Government to nominate Mr Fyke, and the propriety of appointing Sir M. O’Rorke, with a view to his ultimately becoming Speaker is also under consideration. We do not know whether the above is a fact or only a surmise, but we do not think the Government have any constitutional right to make appointments, and it is to be hoped the Governor will exercise his prerogative and decline to sanction any new appointments until it is decided who has the power to recommend them. At all events, there is not the slightest necessity to exercise any undue haste to increase the number of Legislative councillors, as we feel sure if the voice of the colony were taken on the inafcter it would be dead against such a course. There are quite enough already to meet all requirements in the way of checking hasty legislation, and any additions can only be looked upon m the light of another of those political jobs, which have not only disgraced this, but all other countries.
