Do not Attempt too much.
We notice that Mr Ballance is inclined to go in for a change in the incidence of taxation, but we think he would be wise, and those who support him, if they left that question, alone for some time to come. There, is a feeling that the new Parliament, and particularly the Opposition side, will not be equal to the occasion, and that evil results will follow if they are entrusted with the administration of the country’s affairs, that being the case it would be well for those placed in power to be very cautious how they act, as by attempting too much they may come to grief, and thus verify the predictions now so freely made by the Ministerial organs. If Mr Ballance and his supporters hold the reins of Government they cannot go far wrong if they adhere to a liberal land policy, and cari’y such measures as will tend to encourage all kinds of local industries. We should say that this is about all it would be necessary to do at the present time, for in that lies the key to increased prosperity, and it will follow as a natural consequence that our population will increase, which must eventually lead to a reduction in taxation to each individual owing to the greater number to pay the same amount.
