Never Again.
[By Kauikatea.] Fair in the East comes the first faint flush of the dawning, To gladden the eurth, but never again shall you and I Together rejoice as the sunlit mists of the morning, Are rising and melting slowly into the clear blue sky. Nor when the night dews are falling, shall we two roaming Down by the riverside, when the birds “good-night” are singing, And all the valley lies peacefully under the gloaming, Linger where over the current the long birch bows are swinging, Nor in the midsummer months over the Sound’s tossed waters Shall we go merrily sailhig before the favouring breeze, To the quiet cove where so often wc made our night’s quarters. In the little nook o’er-shndowed with drooping fuchsia trees, No more will we loiter and lazily gaze as we wreathe Out of the scarlet rata garlands fragrant and flowery, At the rough brown rocks on the beach and the smooth green bay that i beneath, Shines like the polished poenamu that gleams in the ear of the Maori. Never again ! Never again ! Together shall we the splendour see Of mountain, stream, and dell, Sweet heart of mine, lore of my life, For ever fare thee well !
