DEFINITE LEASE

DEPUTATION’S REQUEST WAIROA SPORTS GROUND (Special to IJio 1 li’i alil.) WAIROA, this day. A deputation from the Athletic Club and Rugby Union, consisting of Messrs, W. G. Brownlie and B. Parkinson, waited on the Wairoa Borough Council at its monthly meeting to get an assurance from the council that these bodies would be able to iiave continued use oi Lambton Square, as they desired to carry out certain improvements to bring the area up to standard. Mr. Brownlie stated that the Athletic Club wanted the position of the lease defined. The club had put a lot of work into Lambton Square and would like a definite assurance from the council as to what the position would be and whether the club would be able to use the ground on future occasions. The ground was not altogether suitable from an athletic point of view and the club intended to topdress the ground. Mr. Parkinson endorsed the previous speaker’s remarks, adding that they wanted to bring the club up to a first-class standard and bring about its permanency in the town. The Mayor, Mr. H. L. Harker, in replying, stated that he appreciated the manner in which the athletic club had carried on since its inception. He asked how long the club wanted the council to give it for a term of occupancy? Mr. Brownlie: As long as the club functions, which we hope will be indefinitely. Mr. Harker advised fixing a period with the right of renewal, say, threeyear terms with the right of renewal. It was decided that the athletic club have free use of the ground and that a sub-committee of three from the council meet a committee of three from the joint bodies, Athletic Club and Rugby Union, to draw up the conditions in connection with the'suggested lease for a term of two years with the right of renewal for three years. Mr. Harker added that the whole thing was contingent upon the Athletic Club and Rugby Union arriving at mutual terms in connection with the ground. Crs. J. O. Scott, J. B. Cook and W. 11. Brady were appointed the council’s sub-committee.
