FIERCE BLAZE
FIRE AT WHAKATANE BUSH DESTROYED A fire of unknown origin broke out at Whakatane oh Sunday in the fern on the hills surrounding the town The strong breeze fanned the flames and they raged all afternoon, burning bare over 100 acres of fern-covered land, which included some beautiful native bush.
The flames passed over newlyplanted sections where there were no dwellings, but razed fences and everything in their path, and the fierce blaze was only kept away from the buildings on Commerce street with much difficulty, as the outbreak was almost too much to cope with. It was at 9 p.m. that the Whakatane Volunteer Fire Brigade were able to relax their efforts, as they were aided only by a small band of volunteers. The fire was still burning, but had moved away from the buildings, 'caving the town in safety.
\n unpleasant situation arose when the fire approached within Oft. of the shed where all the town's explosives were stored, but Mr. W. Henderson, aided by a volunteer. Mr. D. Vincent, carried the two large cases of gelignite to a safe position.
