AFRICAN CABINET RIFT
MR. HOFMEYR RESIGNS DISPUTED APPOINTMENT (Reed. Sept. 10, 11.30 a.m.) CAPETOWN, Sept. 9. The Minister of Mines, Mr. J. H. Hofmeyr, has resigned following’ the crisis in the South African Cabinet, A message dispatched from Capetown on Thursday stated that the South African Cabinet was facing a crisis involving the resignation of Mr. -J. H. Hofmeyr, the Minister of Mines. The crisis arose unexpectedly.. Mr. A. P. Fourie, the Minister of Commerce, was 'defeated at the general election. The Prime Minister, General J. B. Hertzog, decided to nominate him as one of four senators with -a - knowledge, of native affairs. Mr. Hofmeyr expressed the opinion that this was a breach of constitutional practice.
A sitting senator, however, had resigned to make way for Mr. Fourie. It was anticipated that ’Mr. Hofmeyr would resign and that he would be followed by Mr. F. C. Sturrock, Minis-, ter without portfolio.
Mr. F. C. Sturrock, Minister, without portfolio, has resigned. Mr. A. P. Fourie formerly Minister of Commerce, has been appointed to the Senate .and the Cabinet.
