"TRINITY OF EVILS"
EDUCATION IN N.Z. MIXED SCHOOLS URGED HIGHER SALARIES NEEDED (Por Press Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. "As I see it, the trinity of evils in New Zealand is the segregation ,of boys and girls, examinations, and the system of inspectors," said Professor F. W. Hart, of the University of California, in an interview to-day. "We hold that the chief purpose of education is the adjustment of children to the normal life situation, and we think that the normal situation is for boys and girls to be educated together."
A reorganisation of the New Zealand system was advocated in an interview by Dr. William Boyd, of Glasgow. He said that the day of centralisation alone had passed, and that a better system of local schools control would have to be devised. The central department and local schools' authorities should work together. "There is a shocking lack of coordination of primary and secondary education," he said. "New Zealand has got to make up its mind to spend more on education. The salaries arc shocking, and you will never get good men to teach unless you are willing to pay more."
At the conclusion of the principal lecture in the Town Hall to-day, an Auckland group of the Educational Fellowship was enthusiastically formed and a provisional committee appointed.
