COAST IMPROVEMENTS
ROAD * WIDENING WORK PROGRESS ON BRIDGES “One of the narrowest sections of the highway on the whole of the Coast is at present under re-construc-tion, this being the portion a short distance to the north of the boundary of the Waiapu and Uawa counties, between the Mangatuna and Anaura Bay junction,” said the resident A.A. patrol, Mr. D. M. McGregor, in his report to-day. “At present there is not room for two trucks to pass at the bend, which is round the foot of a hill on the bank of the Hikuwai River. To eliminate this bad section the bluff will be cut back and the road level also will be raised several feet.
“Bridge construction work is proceeding on the Coast. The first new bridge is at Turihaua, and on the northern side of the stream two sets of piles have been driven and work is in progress on boxing for the consolidation of the first pier.”
“At Tolaga Bay the new Uawa bridge is proceeding rather slowly and ths reason advanced for this is that, there is a certain amount of difficulty with the driving of the piles in midstream. Workmen are at present engaged, in erecting the parapet side walls on the completed spans.
“The contractors on the Karakatuwhero River bridge are moving ahead with the construction of the new approach road on the Te Araroa side and several trucks are engaged in building up the fills. Due to the magnitude of this work it will take some time to complete, but in the meantime the bridge is being used by traffic by means of run-up ramps and is proving a great boon to road-users in the vicinity.”
