UNDERGROUND HANGARS
UNSUITABLE FOR GISBORNE
The suggestion of an underground hangar and wireless station being established at the New Plymouth airport (published on page nine) has prompted inquiries in Gisborne regarding the prospects here. Even if Gisborne were a point of strategic importance in the defence of the country, it is believed that little in the way of an underground hangar could be built successfully on the present aerodrome, for the soil is regarded as being too sandy and too near high water mark to permit of any such excavations.
The matter of a wireless station is not considered important, for a plant sufficient for emergency needs could be hastily assembled If the position warranted it, and there is a large enough number of amateur experimenters to man it until definite military arrangements could be made.
