One of the largest film exhibition contracts ever made in New Zealand was concluded on Friday by Mr. Cecil Mason, managing director of Columbia Pictures, Limited, who passed through Auckland in the Mariposa on his way back to Sydney after a visit to America. Mr. Mason said that the contract would embrace 71 theatres controlled by New Zealand Theatres, Fuller-Hay ward Theatres, Christchurch Cinemas, and West Coast Amusements. It provided for the supply of all Columbia pictures for 1938, including two films witli Grace Moore as the star, and one directed by Frank Capra. Though the standard of play seen in the Possibles-Probables match in Wellington on Satin day did not prove particularly high, owing no doubt to the nervousness of many of the players on their first trial for All Black honours, it was expected by those who watched the game that better form would be shown as the newcomers to Rugby prominence settled down through the course of trial games. Overshadowed by the North island versus South Island match, staged on the same ground later in the afternoon, the initial trial nevertheless must have given the New Zealand selectors some opportunity for forming opinions concerning the respective aspirants for international standing. Commenting on the match briefly, the Dominion states: —"The game failed to arouse the spectators’ enthusiam, but all of these players, who enjoy good reputations, can be expected to find their feet in the later games. More should be heard of all the wingers.” The comment is chiefly interest to Gisborne readers from its application to A. McAneney, the sole Poverty Bay representative in the trials.
