EMPLOYMENT OF YOUTHS

"INDUSTRY'S OB LIGATION" SYDNEY, July 3. In the course of a judgment in the Industrial Commission yesterday, in which lie announced a new award for glass workers, Mr. Justice Ferguson said that lie had readied the conclusion that an industry should not bo allowed to expand by discarding adults in favour of youths, or by dismissing youths as they advanced in years. He said that he believed that the. principle should now be adopted that industry must accept an obligation to carry forward juniors, subject to their continuous good conduct and fitness, and to the continued prosperity of the industry. "If this principle is not observed," he added, "the commission must give serious consideration to this aspect in future awards." He emphasised that the company to which the new award referred had made efforts to retain youths in its employment as far as possible.
