TRUCK SKIDS ON ICE

WriARERATA ACCIDENT When travelling to Gisborne early this morning the freight truck from Napier left the road on a down grade near Mr. G. Coop’s homestead on Wharerata Hill. On the ice-covered road the lorry’s wheels failed to grip and the lorry got out of control.

Fortunately, there was a special truck on the same run and with some difficulty it was able to pull the other vehicle back on to the road. Towing operations were hindered considerably by the ice, which for a while prevented the second lorry from obtaining sufficient grip to assist the other vehicle. Finally, after 3£ hours’ delay, both lorries were able to resume the journey, arriving in Gisborne shortly before 8 o’clock this morning. The late arrival of the truck caused some delay in the sorting of the mail.
