FIRE ALARM SYSTEMS

INADEQUATE IN HOTELS

LICENSING! COMMITTEE

ANNUAL MEETING HELD

Tho inadequacy of the fire alarm .system in many of the hotels was a matter referred to by the inspector of police, Mr. (_!. P. Edwards, at the annual meeting of the Gisborne Licensing Committee, held to-day. Mr. E. L. Walton, S.M., was in the chair, and the other members present were Messrs. D. J. Parker, W. E. Coffe, and W. J.issant Clavlon.

In his report Mr. Edwards said that some of the hotels had fire-lighting equipment, but it was not sufficient and he had raised the point in order to get a direction from the committee.

The chairman replied that the committee was of opinion that the apparatus should be provided and asked the inspector if he had drawn the attention of tho hotel proprietors to the requirements. Mr. Edwards said he did not want to put them to any expense without a direction from tho committee. There might at some time ho sleepers in the buildings who would not be aroused by a call in tbe event of a fire, but there would ho more chance of sending out an alarm by a system of bells. If the bells and other appliances were situated in a favourable, position it was probable that serious damage to property or loss of life would be prevented.

In connection with chemical extinguishes lie warned owners to have them attended to at intervals, because if they were not serviced it would bo found that they were useless if called upon. Mr. Walton said that tho committee was in agreement with the view. All tho applications dealt with were granted, yet in many cases reasons for not carrying out the’work were submitted and in every ease assurances were given that the improvements to the premises would he completed.
