TAXICABS AT STATION
PROTEST IN AUCKLAND ANNUAL FEE RESENTED (Per Press Association.) AUCKLAND, last night. Taxi-cab drivers of two principal comlames operating in Auckland have cached 'a "decision which will mean a boycott of the arrival platform at the Auckland railway station unless the delartment consents to a reduction in the charge of £1 a- year at present made for the privilege of waiting at the platform to pick up fares. This decision was made at a mass meeting of drivers belonging to two companies as well as independent drivers, but it was explained that the companies ..hemselves were not concerned in the lifference that has arisen. The charge of £1 a year for what is known as a railway license is considered o be excessive liv the majority of drivers, particularly in comparison with the sum of Is a year charged by the Auckland Halbour Board for taxis plying or hire on tlm wharves. Drivers who were interviewed exilained that the railway licenses had exlired as from Monday of this week, and ;aid that none of the drivers had relewed their licenses as they were waitng! for a favourable reply from tho lepartinent. If the request for a lower ■barge was refused they would simply lot renew their licenses and this would neaii that they would discontinue waiting at the arrival platform. Operators of private taxi cabs stated ‘hat no matter what reply was received, they would continue to pay the fee as their livelihood depended, in a large measure, on the amount of work they ibtained at the station.
