BEACH BEAUTIFICATION

PLEA FOR £IOO AT KAITI REFUSAL BY COUNCIL A plea to spend >£loo this year on the beautification of Kaiti Beach was turned down by the Gisborne Borough Council last night. Cr. J. 11. Hall said that he regretted that the council had not sot aside an amount for the beautification of the Kaiti Beach and lie moved that £IOO lie allocated for the purpose. Cr. J. Webb seconded the motion. Cr. IT. 11. DeCosta: How do you intend to beautify it? Cr. Hall said that the first thing to To was lo make a clearance of the shacks and to plant trees. The Mayor. Mr. D. W. Coleman. M.P.. said the council had cut down all things that were not necessary, and an addition of £1 CO would mean an extra 2-64 d in the £ on the rates. Cr. DeCosta: The rates are high ,enough now. The Mayor: We cannot have these things and keep the rates down. Cr. DeCosta said lie would agree to i reasonable scheme, but that could not be done while the shacks were then.. Cr. Webb suggested that jf the shacks were allowed to remain the should be increased and the increased •cut could he used for beautification. , He did not think that the shack owners would object and. in fact, some were willing to . pay more.
