Mr. J. R. llosking has been awarded the Hector Medal and prize by the council of the Royal Society of New Zealand for his- research into the chemistry of New Zealand plants. The amount was fixed at £SO. The Hamilton award was given to Mr. 0. O. Hutton, of the University of Otago.
A better highway between Opotiki and Taneatua is being demanded by the Opotiki County Council. It was pointed out at this week’s meeting of the council that the condition of this highway was a disgrace in contrast with Hie elaborate road works being carried out in other districts.
A further case of infantile paralysis from the Rotorua district has been admitted to the Waikato Hospital, the victim being a girl aged 3 years, whose parents reside at Tnrukenga. This is the second case within the past two weeks, the other being a girl aged about, til years, who at the time of admittance was spending a holiday til Ngongotalia, but whoso parents reside at Matata.
The provision of an alternative stock route in the Itotoili district to provide for slock driven from the Bay of Plenty through 'Rotorua is being considered by the Rotorua County Council. Three miles of formation work, costing about £.'looo, it was stated by the county engineer would provide a stock route and avoid the danger created by the increasing number of; stock now being driven along the main highway in the Roloiti district. It was decided by the council to ask the Minister of Public Works, the Hon. 11. Semple, for a substantial grant for the work.
