WAIROA COUNTY ROADS
ENGINEER’S REPORT IMPROVEMENT WORK (Ilornld Correspondent.) At the Wairoa County ,Council’s meeting the acting engineer, Mr. R. W. Hawthorne, in addition to a detailed report on tho highways, reported geneially as follows: . “Mangapoiko Road.--With regard to tho request made bv AH'- E. C. Conn, that the’ metalled length of two miles of knapped metal should be blinded with limestone cliipe, 1 would like to point out that the cost would bo approximately £450. Blinding with metal from Clark' and Son’s mill depot is being done as opportunity offers by barkloading lorries. The erection ot sliutes at tho o outfalls of culverts is being done where it is considered necessary by the roadmen in tho course ol (heir ordinary maintenance duties. The 6lt. culvert also referred to by Mr. Conn is one installed by the Public Works Department some years ago near the roadman’s whare. During the fiond of April, 1935, which did considerable damage on tho Mangapoike road, the month of this culvert became blocked with debris and tho creek bed was raised several feet, consequently the culvert is now on too fiat a grade. Provision has been made in tho estimates for the lifting of the culvert and this work eanU',t be done till the summer.
“Maraenui Road.—l have prepared an estimnto of tho cost of metalling 10 chains as requested by Mrs. B. Richardson. Metalling at the rate of 6 cub. yds. per chain will cost approximately £45, and would give- access over the worst of the greasy portions. “Waihua Valley Road.—During June, duly and August, I consider it advisable to place a roadman on this road for maintenance work and have engaged Mr. .J. Nicholson, who is living on tho State highway, near the junction with the Waihua Valley road. “Roadman, Ruapapa road.—ln company with jpr. Carroll, I made an inspection of Ruapapa road and it was considered advisable, to engage a roadman during two or three months of the winter for maintenance work. L have engaged Mr. Wapn Ruawai, who is at present living on the road reserve about one mile from the Waikaremoana Valley main highway and the Ruapapa road junction. “Tunanui-Mahia Road.—While the clayey portions referred to on this road become sticky in wet weather, the road is in fairly good order and a roadman has been engaged for three days per week to do maintenance work, juul the clayey portions can be put into’ repair during the ordinary routine of work. To give all-weather access, approximately 96 chains of the road require metalling. I estimate the cost of metalling to he £BOO. Provision for the e.v.penditure of £3CO on metal has been made in the current year’s estimates. “Bridge Gang.—The bridge gang is at present, engaged on repairs to the Ngatapa bridge and the erection of a cable and cage to Mr. R. M. Andrew’s property at Te. Iloe.”
