ROAD MAINTENANCE ENGINEERS REPORT (Tternlil Correspondent.) lb-porting to flic monthly meeting of the Waikolui County Council in To. Kiu-aka yesterday, the engineer. Mr. A. G. I.liras, gave a general review of work' proceeding on tin- roads and bridges of the country, indicating that, general maintenance was being kept up to a. good standard, and that a substantial amount of new work had been put in band during the month. Relating to the Mnta riding. Mr. Lucas intimated that patching, grading and water-table maintenance had been attended to on the main highway, and that top-dressing had been completed on the Xoranga highway. A small bridge on the Motu front road had been replaced by a pipe culvert, near Mr. ■Smith's property. A report on the worst parts ot the Moanui road bad been made, and a Government grant applied for, in order to improve the conditions t here. PATCHING AND GRADING Patch-metalling and grading on the Wailitd.M. highway won- mentioned ill connection with the Wailiuka riding, the engineer also reporting that t lie Public Works Department bad made good progress with metalling on the Rakau-roa-Tahora road, which between the mill and the country boundary was in good order. Damage to water-tables and banks on the Poiilutu highway bad been occasioned through one of the settlors grazing stock on the road, and further damage. had been done by a wash-out near Hie far end of the road. Re-decking work bad been done on the suspension bridge on Oliver road, which road also bad been improved in accordance with tlie application on which a grant bad been received from the Public Works Depart, men:. in the Mangatu riding, a start had been made ill straightening the dip near Afangakinn. on the Whatatutu highway. Grading on the Maiigahnrnia road bad Iceii hold up by wet weather, but the water-tables had been placed in good order. The Mangatu River road would receive attention after the Now Voir. TARND.U.F ROAD I’R.OO RRFF Fences were being prepared on the Tanidalc road, which was completed up to the 12-mile pee, with the exception of a gap of 20 chains. ( amps are being established on a further section of Hie road, which Public Works Department officials are doing their utmost to complete at an early date. Wool-carting requirements on the Wnitangi road bad occasioned the disnalcb of men to cleai the crossings. Taumnto road bad been graded up. but heavy rain bad caused some bad washouts. Plans for the renewal of Shorrntt’s bridge were among those now in Unhands of I lie department. The report concerning Karaka riding indicated that little trouble had been experienced during the month, while the Knunkanaia riding provided little for comment by the engineer. The Rangatirn bridge was now far enough advanced to permit of ears using it at week-ends, when the decking was clear, and the whole work should be completed before.
