STILL RIDES
“BROWNIE” CARSLAKE AfOST VERSATILE JOCKEY When Air. Jack Higgins, chief stipendiary steward to the Royal Calcutta Turf Club, was in Australia a few weeks ago he told an Australian writer on racing topics that of all the riders who rode in India last season — they included many English and Ausrralian jockeys —he considered that “Brownie” Carslake was the most versatile. He added that Carslake seemed to ride as well over short distances as in long races, and all horses—English, Australian or Arab —came alike to him.
“I remembered Mr. Higgins’ remarks when I saw-a photograph of Carslake winning the Balcombo Stakes at Brighton (England) on Lord Portal’s Blue Boy,” continued the Australian writer. “Carslake still retains the neat seat that had made him famous as a
jockey not only in England, but in most Continental countries. “Owing to his weight Carslalce’s opportunities are restricted, but he still wins his share of races, notably the good class events, and his services are freely availed of by the leading trainers. In the winter Carslake goes to India, where he has one or two rich trainers.
'“Carslake is about 50 years of age, and he carries his years lightly, as he is always in good hard condition. Before he went abroad he won several rich races iri Alelbourne, Sydney and Adelaide. I can recall him winning the Epsom on Famous at Bandwick in 1903, and he won the Adelaide Cup the following year on Sport Royal. “Few jockeys retain their form for so many years, and next to Donoglnie, Carslake is the senior jockey in England.
“However, in comparison with R. Lewis he is comparatively young, as “Bob” is nearly 58 years old, and he showed the other day when ho won on Lillircnc at Caulfield that he was still able to hold his own with the youngsters who were not born when he was riding winners of classic races.”
