OBITUARY
MR. A. P. HAWKE. (Per Press Association.) INTER CARGILL, last night. The death of Mr. A. E. Hnwke, a prominent business man, has occurred. Ho was formerly a. member of the Legislative, Council.
Mr. Walter Joseph Maeklow, (lie last member of the well-known firm of Macklow Brothers, timber merchants, Auckland, 'died, this week. The late Mr. Macklow was, born in Rnglnnd fi4 years ago ami came to New Zealand ■with other members of his family in the ship Eagle Speed, reaching Auckland in 1864. His father, who was an expert master engraver, commenced! farming with his three; sons' at Mahnraiigu when" they carried on successfully for a number of years. Having a. large quantity of highclass kauri timber on their land and not finding a profitable; market for it the three sons established the mill at Mechanics' Bay in 1888. They also acquired extensive, areas of kauri and kahikatea in the north, bringing the logs to the mill at Auckland in their own scows. This grew to bo one of the most extensive export timber businesses, in the province, at the same time doing a large local trade and engaging in box-making.
