SOUTH AFRICAN VETERANS

GISBORNE BRANCH MONTHLY MEETING CONFERENCE MATTERS The monthly meeting of tho Gisbome branch of the South African War Veterans' Association of New Zealand was held in the Selvffn Hall on Saturday evening, Veteran F. Collin presiding over a. fair attendance of members. After declaring the meeting open, the chairman said be. bad again a. sad ditty to perform, a. duty which during the last few months had become a- matter of routine. Sinco the last meeting one of their number had "gone West." Jvo. 6368, Veteran R. 0. (Dick) Pascoe, who until illness overlook him was a valued and enthusiastic, member of the association. The usual compliment was paid by those present standing in silence. ' Correspondence of a lengthy nature was dealt with. The Dominion secretary wrote enclosing a copy of the minutes of the first meeting of the new Dominion executive. Mr. D. W. Coleman, M.P., forwarded a letter from the Minister of Defence, the Hon. F. Jones, with reference to a. deceased soldier. Mr. J. W. Heenan, Under-Secretary of the Internal Affairs Department, wrote on the. same subject. Mr. R. Burke, of the Tauranga association, wrote with reference to the result of the last, conference altering the basis of the voting power. Mr, B. M. Looney, hon. secretary of the Woolwich association, advised that ho had arranged for private accommodation to bo made available for about 20 people during the Coronation ceremony next year-. _ Veteran J. G. Swarbrick sent a donation. DOMINION CONFERENCE

The recent Dominion conference was reported on by the delegate. The conference was held in the new rooms at 125 Lambton quay,' Wellington, which had been recently opened by the Wcllington association, and in which Captain J. J, Clark had been the prime mover. The rooms were very comfortably furnished, and on the walls wero hung pictures and photographs of commanders of New Zealand units, British generals, and different New Zealand contingents, books dealing with the South African War, and many and varied souvenirs. A complete set of Krugev money had been obtained. One thing lacking, said Captain Clark, was postage stamps of the Transvaal, and Orange. Free State- of the war period, and donations m that respect would be much appreciated. South African veterans visiting Wellington wero invited to call and mako use of the rooms. The Wellington members held various: social functions during the season, and they also entertained the delegates attending the conference at a smoke concert, when the Wellington association was complimented on its enterprise in opening such spler»did rooms.

Veteran MeCallum, sick visitor, _ reported that no members were in hospital, Veteran H. limes having returned home. APPOINTMENT OF BUGLER

Some discussion took place regarding a bugler, as Bandsman A. Stein, who had blown, the calls in the past, had left the district, On the last occasion when » bugler was required Mr. G. Douglas, conductor of the Gisborne military band, generously volunteered bis sorviees. It was decided to leave the matter in tho hands of the' hon. secretary and Veteran ,T. T. MeLoughlin, to make arrangements. No. 5253, 'Veteran J.. 0. Swarbrick, was taken on tho strength as from September 1, 1936.
