MOTOR SHIP WITH SAILS
JURY RIG FOR MATUA VOYAGE FROM RAROTONGA DAMAGE TO PROPELLER (Per Pi*oss Association.) AUCKLAND, this day. Aided by two headsails made out of deck awnings and set on. the foremast, the Union Steam Ship Company’s motor ship, the Matuu. with her port propeller and rudder damaged, returned from Rarotonga to Auckland in nine days, arriving here this morning. Her average speed was between eight, and nine knots.
When the ship was leaving Aitutaki at about 8 p.m. oil September 15, her port quarter struck some, submerged coral. The impact was so slight that few passengers noticed it- The ship returned io Rarotonga, leaving 10,000 cases ot oranges at. Atiu and Mauke, and left Rarotonga on September 16. A strong •nojitli'-ensterly gale >,vus encountered;, but the ship rail before it carrying both sails.
The cargo of 6160 bases of oranges and 300 boxes of toriiatbes landed iii perfect condition. After lid’ discharge, tho ship is to d'oek for repairs:
