NOTED WOMAN GOLFER
MISS JOYCE WETHERED TO MARRY BARONET LONDON, Sept. L Miss Joyce Wethered, four times winner of the British .women’s open golf championship, is shortly to mari-y Sir John ITcathcoat Amory, of Kni gilts haves Court, Tiverton, Devon. -Sir John, who succeeded his father in the baronetcy in 1931, was formerly captain of the Devon Comity Cricket team. He is also- a keen golfer. lie is 42 and Miss Wethered 1 34. iSir John was educated at Eton and Christ Church, Oxford. During the War lie served with the 4th Bn. Devon Regiment in India and Mesopotamia, and' in Persia and the Caucasus with the Dunster Force. He is a. director of the lacemaking firm of John Heathcoat and Company. Miss Wethered first won the open championship in 1922. After an unexpected defeat in the semi-final in the following year, she was again champion in 1924 and 1925. She did not take part in competitive golf again until 1929, when she gained a thrilling victory in the final of the open championship after being five down. Later she announced that it was her last championship game. • She lias won the English, women s golf championship five times and represented England in six international matches. In February last year Miss Wethered joined the staff oE a Piccadilly shop as golf adviser and later toured the United States and Canada as a golf professional. In 1931 Aliss Wethered’s engagement lo Afajor C. K. Hutchison, the Scottish international golfer, was announced, Rut in the following year it was stated that the marriage would not take place.
