TOMASINI OF THE 10TH

00VENT GARDEN FIND

“Atticus” tells this story .in (he Loudon Sunday Times: A few weeks ago Co vent Carden ian out of baritones. Someone had to be found to sing the important, role of Marcel in “La Boheme” on the following night. Hasty reference to the records showed that a young opera singer named Anion Young was available and also a singer named Tomasmi. Both stated in their letters that they had had considerable experience in. Italian opera, but the choice went to lomasini. He had not sung “La Boheme” since 1931, but, concealing that fact, lie stayed up fill dawn studying the part, and on the next night scored a great success. His Italian was, of course, perfect, and he never gave the conductor a. moment s anxiety. When the Canadian Pilgrims gathered at Westminster Hall, Tomasini was among them. His commanding height made him stand out even among those stalwarts,• although his bearing bad the unmistakable manner of the theatre. It is a strange story, for Tomasini was wounded at Viiny Ridge when serving with the 10th Canadian Battalion. His, name is Anion Young. He was born on the Canadian prairies and has not a drop of Italian blood in him.
