STEEL WORKS PROJECT

INCORRECT STATEMENTS QUESTION IN THE HOUSE (Per Truss Association.) WELLINGTON, last night. Whether the Government was iu any way con nee tod with the project launched by an English company, Pacific Steel, Limited, for rho establishment of steel works in New Zealand, was the subject of a question addressed to the Minister of Industries and Commerce, the Hon. T). a. Sullivan, by .Mr. 1). Barnes (Lab., Waitaki) in the House of Representatives. The Minister replied that, according to the information of the Government, Pacific Steel, Limited, was a company incorporated in London with a share capital of £IOO, and the Government had no knowledge of a company of that title with a capital of £i?,000,000. Publications entitled "A Steel Works for New Zealand," purported to give certain facts in regard to the Government's interest in the proposals of the company, which were definitely incorrect and misleading. "Negotiations between the company and the Government have taken place," said the .Minister, "and the •company some months ago was informed that its proposals were no acceptable. .In view of the magnitude of the steel industry, a comprehcnsiv< investigation is required before the Government can finally decide in favour of its establishment. An investigation has been in progress for some time, but of necessity some time will elapse before it can be com pleted."
