COMPETITION MATCHES DECLINE IN INTEREST END OF SEASON NEAR Perfect weather conditions prevailed for the Poverty Bay Basketball Association's competition matches played on the Childers Road Courts. The enif of the season decline in interest accounted for the default of several teams. Results were as follow: A Grade—-l-luia 11 v. Tuis 9. High .School (A) 14 v. Marathon 8. St Mary's A 28 v. 11.5.0. G. (I'.) 7. Marist defaulted to H.S.OUi. (A). --15 GradeHigh School (B) 17 v. High School iC) 6. , St. Mary's (B) 14 v. Ormond 7. Cash. Stores (A) 18 v. Woolyvorths 13. 11.5.0. G. (0) defaulted to Athletic. —0 Grade— St Mary's (C) 18 v. Caledonian 7. Rovers 15 v. High School (D), 12Olympic 12 v. High School (E) 2. 11.5.0. G. (D) defaulted to Cash Stores (B). In the senior grade Huia and luis had a close game, interest, being .maintained until the final whistle, by the even scoring. The game provided one of the best exhibitions of carefree basketball seen this season. Huia's success was due, in large measure to the excellence of its defence, the players in this section giving an outstanding display. Tui's defence also worked hard throughout the game and were clnelly instrumental in giving the forwards many opportunities. As was anticipated, St. Mary's (A) pvove'd too strong for H.S.O.G. (B); the winners' combination proving too stiff a proposition for Old Girls. High School (A), after a poor start, quickly settled down to secure a comfortable lead by half-time. In the second session a particularly good display was given by both teams, the High School forwards scoring consistently, despite a close defence by Marathon. EASY WINS High School (B) had an easy win over High School (C) after a rather scrambling game. The B team made practically all the play and was particularly accurate in the forward line. St. Mary's (B) experienced no difficulty in defeating Ormond, the latter being'handicapped" by the absence of two players. St. Mary's goalies were not troubled by the Ormond defence and secured easily and scored accurately. Woolworths put up a surprisingly good performance against Cash Stores (A), and though going down by five goals, had a fairly even share of the play. The game was always interesting and basketball of a very high standard was sustained from start to finish. St. Mary's (C) established a lead early in the game against Caledonian and afterwards were never fully extended to retain their advantage, in the second half Caldonian played an improved game and as a .result 'of'good combined play scored consistently, but failed to overtake St. Marv's substantial lead. Neither team in the meeting between Olympic and High School (E) took the game very seriously, owing to both teams being under full strength. Play wits haphazard for a start, but gradually improved. Olympic's forwards had plenty of play and were able to convert from'favourable positions.
