TENNIS SEASON

MARIST OLUB THE ANNUAL REPORT OPTIMISM FOR FUTURE The following is the report of the Jurist Tennis Club to be presented by the committee on Monday evening to the annual meeting of the club : "The past season has been one oi marked development and the general position of the club undoubtedly has been greatly improved as a result of the wood services rendered by the committee and members generally. "At the commencement of the season various improvements were effected to the pavilion, and the fences and courts were all put int<i first class condition. A new water-roller was auquired and under the expert supervision of the green superintendent. Mr. Ken Muir, the condition of the courts was well maintained throughout the season. SPIRIT OF COMPETITION "The .season was marked by an increased spirit of competition and keenness amongst members, as was evidenced )V the food attendances in the latter part oi' the season. No'doubt this was largely due to the greater number of competitions played, embracing all classes of handicap and championship matches. Interest in the matches was heightened by the donations of cups by Gisborne Leatheries. Chrisp Music Company, Limited, md Mr Charles E. Brown, to whom the thanks of the club are due. The club champions proved to be Mr. Trevor Muir and Mrs. Elliott. "In inter-club matches the club performed creditably, the A team winning five out of six matches played. Two of the club's members performed well in outside matches, Mr. J. Thomson being successful in winning the Poverty Bay and East Coast handicap singles event, and Miss N. Thomson annexing, the secondary schools' singles championship. Both "these young players reveal much iromise. A popular feature of the season was the excellent services rendered by Mrs. J. Gunn. PROFIT ON YEAR

"The annual accounts show a profit of £•10 lis Bd, which is highly satisfactory. "During the autumn the courts were lop-dressed with good soil and this should improve the surface for the future. "Centrally situated and possessing five courts and'room for others, there is no reason why the club should not be one of the strongest in the district and the commttee feels that with, good management there is every reason for optimism re--nrding the future." WHATAUPOKO CLUB EARLY START LIKELY * The annual meeting of the Whataupoko Tennis Club was held last evening, Mr. W. F. Kennedy presiding over the largest attendance for many years. . In. the course of discussion on the annual report, satisfaction was expressed at the successful season experienced last year and at the prospects for the coming .season. It was stated that the courts had received the usual attention during the winter months and were in such excellent condition that it was expected that play would be possible earlier than usual. Comment was made on the greatly | improved standard of play, and it was 'decided to try and increase the opportunities for singles play. Officers were elected as follows: President, Mr. R. Barker; vice-presi-dent, Mr. E. M. Hutchinson; committee. Messrs. W. F. Kennedy, D. K. McLauchlan, P. H. Dow, J. J. Steevens and A. Ahlen; secretary and treasurer, Mr. R, B. Pearson; auditor, Mr. F. GISBORNE CLUB PAST SEASON REVIEWED IMPROVING THE COURTS The annual report of the Gisborne uwn Tennis Club to be presented at tonight's meeting of club members in the "Mary rJizabeth" tea rooms states:— -Despite the fact that weather conditions last season "were anything but conducive to tennis, play, the club is fortunate in having experienced an entirely successful season, wnile the executive is able to report an improvement of £33 .n the income and expenditure account, jwn after taking into account a considerable loss on its annual ball and writing JJ2O off its assets. "For the first time in many years the holder of the Men's Championship Singles, Mr. N. H. Bull, was defeated, and congratulations are extended to Mr. P. Kaua, the new holder of the title, as well as to the many other successful players in the club's competitions. "The fact that Mr. Bull was defeated is only an indication that the younger players in this club are coming into their own, and besides Mr. Kaua, many others are playing such good tennis that it is extremely hard to pick anyone out of the first half-dozen of the club's members as being the probable champion for the coming year.

"The younger players have wisely been encouraged, and the club's enterprise in setting aside one court for school members at a small subscription has been highly commended and nodoubt will show results in a few years' time in providing the club with players able to take the place of those who now hold championship honours. "The club is still able to provide two teams, able not only to hold their own with the best of other clubs but in fact to defeat them. RE-SURFACING COMMENCED

"The policy of the club has always been to provide the best of facilities for its players, and although these courts have always been chosen by the Tennis Association for its Christmas tournament, the club's; committee has decided further to improve the surface of its courts, and with this in view a start has been made on re-surfacing and levelling the courts. One of them has been turned over, re levelled and sown during
