BRITAIN GROWS LESS

SMALLER AREA CULTI-

VATED

LONDON, Aug. 18. British farm land, some, of it the finest in the world, is gradually going out of cultivation. This year Britain has nearly half a million fewer acres of arable land than last year. The Ministry of Agriculture's report, based on returns at the June 4 census of holdings of more than one acre, reveals a. decline in cereals of 41,000 acres, compared with 1935. The area under wheat was 69,000 acres smaller on the year. Barley increased by 27,000 acres, but oats fell b'v 1600 acres.

Potato figures show an alarming reduction of 7COO acres, the present area of 456,000 acres being the lowest since 1931. Sugar beet declined by 10,500 acres. The total, at 356,800 acres, is below that in 1933.

Among the livestock population, only sheep showed an increase.
