MINISTER WIELDS PICK
HELP TO CLEAR ROAD BLOCKAGE IN GORGE (Per Press Association.) WELLINGTON, this day. Held up by a large slip in the Taita Gorge yesterday afternoon, the Hon. r. Semple, the Minister of PublicWorks, left his car, took off his coat and seized a pick and gave a helping hand to a gang of city and suburban Highways Board men who were clearing the road.
Mr. Semple was on his way north and his was the first car to r’each the slip at 1.45 p.m. Undaunted by the slush and boulders and the lack oi bowyangs, he showed no hesitation in getting to work and within a few minutes his shoes were coated with
mud and the bottoms of his trousers wore generously 'bespattered. It took 35 minutes for the road to be cleared enough to allow one-way traffic, and Mr. Semple, who had been toiling unceasingly', complimented the men on the speed of the job.
