LAST-MINUTE APPEAL

HOCKEY TOURING FUND WOMEN’S TOURNAMENT PINAL DECISION TO-NIC ITT The final decision as to whether the Poverty Ray hockey representative team will travel 'to Blenheim to take part in the New Zealand women’s tournament next week will be made at. a meeting to-night, when a review will he made ol the financial position.

A last-minute appeal for funds would not have been necessary but for the failure of the “gale” for the Fijian match owing to the worst weather oi the winter occurring on the day of the mate 1. Those supporting the proposal to send the team to the tournament had made arrangements, for a large sum towards the touring fund, but. when the Poverty Bay Hockey Association found itself in difficulties over the Fijian team s visit, the money in hand was given to the association to reimburse guarantors and the payment of accounts incurred during the visit. The response to the appeal so far has been encouraging, but about £A) is still required before sufficient money is in hand. This is the deficit after taking into account, the £3 each which the members of the team are required to find.

Supporters of the tour are keen that Poverty Bay should be represented at the tournatment, Ibecause of the .improvement: which has taken place in the play of the representative team this year. Poverty Bay is drawn in a weak section, and hopes are entertained that this district’s team will reach at least the semi-final.

At this evening’s meeting of players and executive, the full list of donations I will he presented, together with an estimate of the cost of travel. Billeting lias boon arranged in Blenheim. If sufficient money has been promised, the 1 tour will be made. The appointment of a Qnatiager for the team also will be I made this evening, if it is decided that the team should travel. MEN’S GAME YESTERDAY WAIROA VISITORS BEATEN A team from the United club, \\ airoa, played a Gisborne team on the Childers Road Reserve yesterday, the visitors being defeated by three goajs to one. The teams were: —Wairoa. McLaughlan. Hooper, Cooper, Crarer, Prior, -McAipine, Foster, Dalzeil, Russell, Rees and Drummond. Gisborne. Wairoa scored first, Dalzeil being responsible, and maintained a I—o lead at i/alDtime. Turbitt equalised with a good shot from an acute angle, while Harrison and Swan scored the other goals for Gisborne.

Gisborne had the advantage iof a strong half line, which was the same .as that in the representative team against Auckland earlier in the season. Turbitt and Harrison were the most prominent of the forwards. On the Wairoa, side, Dalzeil and Russell played well in the forwards, with Prior the best bait. Hooper and Cooper made a pair of reliable fullbacks, and MeLaiighlan effected some good saves in goal.
