CALEDONIAN UNBEATEN

SPIRITED Y.M..C.A. GAME

THE INDIAN TUSH POPULAR

Caledonian survived in a spirited game with Y.M.C.A. (A) in the senior men's hockey competition on the Childers Road Reserve on Saturday, and kept, their unbeaten record for tho season. Play was fast and even, providing the only bright match of the. afternoon on the'reserve. Results were:— —Senior Men — Caledonian 3 v. Y.M.C.A. (A) 2. Foresters. 3 v. Y.M.C.A. (B) 0. —Junior Men— High School (A) 8 v. Y.M.C.A. 0. High School (B) 2 v. Caledonian 2. —Ladies— Kia Toa (B) 3 v. Old Girls (A) 0. Kia Toa (A) 6 v. Old Girls. (B) 3. Y.M.P. defeated M.I.A. by default. —Schoolboys— Rovers 5 v. Turanganui 2. Marist boat Mangapapa by default. CALEDONIAN v. Y.M.C.A. (A) MATCH Caledonian had a close call in the match against Y.M.C.A. (A), for the lied Triangle boys played better hockey, and were unfortunate in not scoring more goals. In territorial advantage there was little between the teams, but, tho Y.M.C.A. forwards showed belter combination, with Wade, and Forman playing their best games of the season so far, and B. Harrison getting through a lot of work. Tho halves played steadilv throughout, keeping well behind the forwards, while Staeey was the. sounder of two good fullbacks,- with Coker playing a spectacular game in goal. The Caledonian forwards were inclined to bo scratchy, and when they did open out they ' played too much on orthodox lines, except for Slade, whose stiekwork has improved greatly since last season and who, though closely marked, kept his forwards well supplied with opportunities. Turbitt was spasmodic, sometimes revealing some- of his- old brilliance, but at others acting, 100 slowly. Crothers showed promise on the right' wing. Douglas was the best of the half line, with Lowe a .sound and hard-hitting fullback, whose brilliant saves at times were assisted by a run of good luck.

The Indian push and flick shots were used effectively by both teams, the push stroke being seen' more- frequently. This style of play has developed well this season, after last year's disappointing attempts. Both types of stroke proved baffling to the defence of either side, often because of the difficulty in anticipating tho direction in which the shots were going.

| Y.M.C.A. opened tho score within the ! first few minutes of tho game, Prentice netting from a scramble in front of the goal. For sonio time, tho Caledonian forwards could not. settle down to combined effort. After 15 minutes' play, Crothers centred to tho twenty-five, where Slade snapped the ball into the circle, following in, drawing the goalie out and scoring an equalising goal. Neither side gained much advantage during the- remaining play before halftime, but B. Harrison got into a nice shooting position for Y.M.C.A., and MMit in a high shot, which was pulled down by Lowe in the goal-mouth, saving an otherwise certain goal. Halt-time arrived with tho score still even, I—l. Caledonian secured the advantage from tho outset after the change over, and several shots, were, sent in, Coker, the goalie kicking out some and Gavin saving another with a backhand stroke. Eventually, from a penalty corner, Slade scored with a hot shot. Caledonian continued to attack for several minutes, but Y.M.C.A. broke away. Wade secured at the twenty-five, and, drawing the goalie, sent the ball dribbling towards an open goal, but Douglas came up in time to prevent a score. Play travelled fast to the other end, where Turbitt netted with a long shot, but no goal was allowed, Turbitt being penalised for sticks. Y.M.C.A. came back along the right wing, and a long centre from Forman gave Wado an opportunity to score from point blank range, making the goals even once more. Y.M.C.A. swept to the attack again, the Forman-Wade combination getting to the goal on two more occasions, Wade once missing by inches. Play now became very keen around the Y.M.C.A. goal and Coker saved well with his feet. At this stage, a player, after a mix-up in the circle, .was ordered off the field. Caledonian kept to the. attack, and from a centre by Crothers on the right- wing, Slade goaled with a good shot. Y.M.C.A. made a determined attack, and Wade took the ball through from the. twentyfive, but was stopped by Leach in the goal-mouth, the ball being cleared after a scramble. Time was called with the .■•core unaltered. Caledonian three, Y.M.C.A. two. Messrs. CI. Graham and B. Tuhoe were the referees.

CHAMPIONSHIP POINTS Caledonian has now a lead of six points in the championship, the table reading as under :

High School (A) combined very well in defeating Y.M.C.A. by eight goals to nil. Halberl, the High School centre forward, was the outstanding player on the field, with 'the inner left, Carmiohacl. also playing well, and B. Piesse a splendid half. Camithers made some good saves in gqal for Y.M.0.A., while Wilson, left wing, and Swan, centre forward, were the best of the remaining players on the. side
