LAST NIGHT’S KORERO

GISBORNE SAVAGE CLUB LARGEST THIS YEAR PARITIES FOR RELIEF Easily two lorry loads of parcels will be put into “Mother Hubbard’s Clipboard” by the Gisborne Savage Club as a result of last night’s parcel-night korero in the City Hall. The largest crowd at one of the club’s nights this year was in attendance and 1 thoroughly enjoyed the popular programme. In addition to the parcels, a competition for trophies donated by Savages R. C. Parker, D. J. Barry, and R. W. Coop, and donations by Savages unable to take parcels, realised almost £3O. Savage A. F. Hall made an ideal chairman for the evening.

There were a large number of visitors, including Major-General Sir William L. H. Sinclair-Burgess and Mr. Justice Reed, and they were welcomed by the rangatira, Savage W. J. Sinclair. The rangatira also announced that the chairman lor the evening at the next korero would be Savage G. J. Adams, rangatira of the Wanganui Savage dub and president of the Kindred Clubs’ Association of New Zealand. Savage Adams will be bringing a party of Wanganui Savages with him to make a raid on the Gisborne club and thoy will provide several of the items. It was also mentioned that a party of Rotorua Orphans intend making a raid oil the club towards the end of July. The winners of the competition were Messrs. N. Anderson, J. 11. Hill, W. Norman, L. Miles, and ltugg.

A feature of the programme was the revival of the nigger minstrels and the old coon songs, which took up the second half. The patter was provided by Savages C. Y . Harre, interlocutor, R. Maclean, bones, and H. McLernon, tambo The popular orchestral items, conducted by the musical director. Savage Mainland L. Foster, included “C-orie-laii" overture, selection from the “Belle of New York,” “Wonderful Garden of Dreams,” selection from the “Bing Bovs,” and the march “Sword and Lance.” Other items were operatic choruses bv the choir, recitations by Savage A. J. Nicol, a dance by Mr. John Tliodev, and songs by a visitor, Mr. Pierard. Another interesting item was an exhibition of wrestling holds by Messrs. T. Smale and A. Bead. Tins was followed by an exhibition bout by Messrs. Read and C. Fla veil.
