After yesterday’s meeting of the VVaikohu County Council, the chairman, Mr. A. A. Fraser, entertained his fellow councillors at luncheon at the ltangatira Hotel, Te Karaka, to signalise the completion of another year of council business.

A decision to provide in the estimates for clearing work in the lower reaches of the Taruhcru Creek, and to approach the Public Works Department for assistance in continuing the work in that stream, was taken by the Cook County Council yesterday, the cost so far as the county council was concerned being -borne equally by the Taruhcru and Whataupoko ridings.

Authority to dispose of bluogum trees growing on the roadsides ir> Upper Fox street, to the best possible advantage, was given to the engineer, Mr. K. F. Jones, at yesterday’s meeting of the Cook County Council. It was agreed by those members familiar with the trees that they had no particular scenic value, but should be worth a substantial sum for milling or firewood purposes. . The contention that special rating areas created in the days before the Main Highways Board came into existence, and before the prospect of a railway for Gisborne was available, should now be wiped out was made by Cr. F. S. Bowen, at yesterday’s mooting of the Cook County Council. Cr. Bowen stated that, in many cases, his riding included, loans had been raised for county roads and bridges which had since been incorporated in the main highways system of the country. Some of the special rates were still going on, and if no relief was given some would go on to 1958. He suggested that at the first opportunity this matter should be taken up with the Minister of Public Works. Cr. M. T. B. Hall agreed that the point was one of great importance, for in addition to special rates raised originally in the ridings, the ridings had to bear a proportion of interest clue upon comity loan funds spent on the same roads and bridges. Cr. E. H. Baker likewise supported Cr. Bowen, stating that some ridings were in a worse position than the Muriwai riding, iiaving had no portion of their roads taken over as main highways. The county clerk, Mr. F. T. Robinson, mentioned that after two county conferences in the past, the same point had been raised, and the suggestion had been made that the old roads should be taken over en bloc by the Main Highways Board. The answer made to that proposal was that interest on old loans would leave only au insignificant amount of the bqard’s revenue available for extending the highways system.
