SUPERB MARKSMANSHIP

PE, MAN'S SUCCESS

THE TRENTHAM MEETING

J.EUNE WINS H.B. MATCH

Highly complimentary reference to the performance of F. J. Jeune, leading marksman in the Gisborne Defence Rifle Club’s team at the National Rille Association’s meeting at Trentham, in winning the Hawke’s Bay match, is made in the Dominion’s report of Monday's activities at the range. The match was shot at 600yds, and in execrable weather conditions, the Dominion’s comment being as under:— “Although the rough weather in which the Hawke’s Bay match was fired was responsible for many marksmen who had done well in the previous matches making poor scores, there were others who were able to master the conditions. Rifleman F. J. Jeune, Gisborne, finished with 49 to win the first prize of £5. His two sighting shots were threes, and he then put on a string of bull’s-eyes, which was only broken by an “inner’’ for his eighth shot. Such a score under the conditions prevailing was a superb jiiece of marksmanship. Captain W. N. Masefield, Blenheim', and Rifleman H. H. King, Karori, tied for second place, e;ieh with a 48. Two points only were also dropped by Rifleman J. E. Farley, Wanganui, but on the count-hack lie had to he content- with fourth place.

In the same match, R-. 0. Bull, Gisborne, registered a score of 46, and A. Ford, another of the Gisborne team, equalled this performance, while in (lie B grade of the same shoot, T. Ilcrivel secured a good score but was counted out of the prize list. Rifleman J. E. Farley, Wanganui, whose scoring suffered under t lie weather conditions which marred the Hawke's Bay match, won the Trentham Aggregate with a total of 238. The only member of the Gisborne team to figure among the prize-winners in this aggregate competition was F. J. Jeune, whose combined scores for the Canterbury, Otago, Hawke’s Bay and Wellington matches totalled 230. The team is expected to return to Gisborne to-morrow evening.
