MONTHLY MEETING

CAPITAL ESTIMATES

(Hurnld Correspondent.) The Wairoa Hospital Board met on Tuesday afternoon, there being present: Messrs' P. J. Brewster, chairman, W. J: Hill, A. T. Carroll, J. M. Taylor, M. I*. Chapman, H. L. Harker, and It. Tapper, jun.

The meeting, being the first in the new board room, the chairman welcomed the members and regretted the absence of Archdeacon Butterfield. He hoped the work would proceed as harmoniously in the future as it had done in the past in the old room.

Mr. Chapman reported favourably on the condition of the board’s house in Lucknow street, and after some discussion it was decided to call applications for disposal. Tn reply to Mr. Taylor, the chairman stated that- applications for the examination of suspected tuberculosis patients by Dr. Shore could be made through the medical superintendent or the district nurses. The. questioner referred to the charge for such examination as a hardship. and after some discussion it was decided that no charge should be made for X" ray examinations of supposed tuberculosis patients.

The Department of Health wrote agreeing to an extension by 3ft. of the women's ward, and extension to the men’s ward verandah.—The letter was received. It was decided that before a tender for the milk supply was accepted that tenderers should produce a certificate that the milking herd hud passed a tuberculin test.

It was agreed to take out a cover lor £IOOO in the State office in respect to possible accidents occurring to visitors to the hospital. The Friendly Societies’ Council applied for a renewal of the existing agreement. —lt was decided that a committee comprising the chairman and Messrs. Hill, Chapman, and Taylor should meet delegates from each lodge at 7.30 p.m. on Friday.

Tbe Tauranga Hospital Board asked for reciprocity in the matter of patients’ fees.—This was agreed to. The Waipawn Hospital Board forwarded the itinerary of Dr. Shore in connection with tin. ami-tuberculosis campaign. He is to be in Wairoa on March 27. —It, was reported that a number of healthy persons were living in one room, nnd it was decided to advise the Health Department of the ease. The Wellington Hospital Board offered reduced fees if Wairoa would reciprocate. —This was agreed to. ESTIMATES FOR. 1936-37 The finance committee reported:— “That the Friendly Societies’ Council be offered a new agreement as per draft, at the rate of 22s per annum contribution, for the forthcoming year. That provision be made in the capital estimates for 1936-37 for the following expenditure: Balance of present building contract and extras and architect’s fees, £500; erection of tuberculosis block, £750; extensions to men’s ward, £500; ward furniture and equipment, £200; refrigerating unit, £150; furnishing ante-natal clinic, £SO; bowl and crockery sterilisers, £SO : motor mower and points, £SO; miscellaneous equipment, £6O; total, £2310. That accounts amounting to £1277 he passed for payment.” Tenders for supplies were received, but consideration of them was held over. —The report was adopted, including the capital estimates. Tlie medical superintendent, reported as follows:—“Number of patients remaining on January 31, 36; number of patients admitted during February, 47; total treated, 83; number discharged during February 56; died, 2; number remaining on February 29, 25; total days’ stay, 924; average occupied bed, 31.9 ; number of operations, 17; in hospital over eight, weeks, 9 cases. The pnation, Miss E. S. Harvey, reported : “The health of the staff lias been good. Sister Mallon has returned from annual leave. Nurse Thompson has resumed duty after her slight accident. Sister Lindsay is on annual leave. Sister Bennett, who acted as night special at isolation, finished duty there on February 23. Sister Steele, the day special nurse, will finish soon. I wish to thank the following donors of gifts: Flowers, Mesdames Powell, Prebble, McDonald, Simpson, and McKay; books, Mrs. Richardson, Te Reinga ; fruit, Mrs. G. Jardine; vegetables, Anglican Church, North Clyde, per Mr. Mist. The band gave a most enjoyable programme of music on February 23.”—The reports were adopted, and a vote of thanks passed to the donors and musicians. The chairman’s honorarium was fixed at the same, figure as last year. The April meeting will be held on the third Tuesday owing to the incidence of Easter week.

Mr. Harker ; irought up the question of trying to dispose of the second site, the golf ground, in order to cut out the levy this year on capital expenditure. The secretary said this could not lie done in time. Mr Harker, after advancing arguments whfth lie wished the members to study, gave notive to move : “That- at next meeting the matter of disposing of the site in question he discussed.”
