MATAWAI NEWS
(Herald Correspondent.) The sympathy of her Matawai friends is extended to Mrs. John Hope in tne sad loss sustained by her in the death of her brother at Wairoa recently, and to Mrs. W. Thomas, whose sister died in Sydney after a long and painful illness. Miss It. M. Smith, Matawai, lias been appointed to take charge of the Karetu School, and commenced her duties on Monday morning.—Mrs. M. J. 0. Thacker, Miss Gibson and Mr. C. Davy‘were the week-end guests of Mr. and Mrs. A. E. Gibson, Matawai. —Mr. and Mrs. R. Wcbbe, formerly of Lower Ilutt, were recent guests of their daughter, Mrs. C. Hustler, Matawai. They left for Rotorua on Sunday.
Little interest was shown in Matawai in the elections for the Bay of Plenty Licensing Committee, which took place at the school on Tuesday. At the meeting of the St. Mary’s Ladies’ Guild, Matawai, held at Mrs. 0. V. Smith's residence, there was a fair attendance. An apology for absence was received from Mrs. G. F. Mortlernan. As Mrs. W. Thomas intimated her inability to carry on as president, Mrs. Smith was appointed, and Mrs. G. F. Mortlernan accepted the position of secretary. Arrangements were made for each member to take her turn at caring for the church after Easter, the preparations for decorating for the Harvest Festival on March 22, and lor (lie Easter services on April 12, to he undertaken jointly.
